Steel fabrication is much more than welding or bolting together some steel sheets into a product.  It is much more complicated than that and requires a high level of skill and expertise.

To start with, engineers working on fabricated steel products are highly trained in a number of fabrication methods and have to follow strict quality control procedures to ensure that products are precision made to exceptional quality.

Companies providing steelwork offer a great deal more than just the fabrication part of the process. It starts from concept and design of the product.  Steel fabrication companies will have in-house design engineers who will be able to take their customers’ drawings and work with them to provide a complete, high quality fabrication service.

Once designed, then the fabrication process can begin.  Firstly, large steel sheets will be cut to size in accordance with the 3D drawings.  During this, a variety of processes can be carried out – depending on the product requirements – such as drilling and boring.  Following this, the steel is bent or formed into various angles or shapes.  The parts must then be joined together, which can be achieved by bolting or welding of the pieces.  Different welding techniques will be used depending on the requirement.  These include MIG welding (metal inert gas), TIG welding (tungsten inert gas) or spot welding.  The latter is used to join overlapping metal sheets, whilst the other two produce a constant welded seam.

To finish off the fabricated steel, the product will be shot blasted to remove any paint or sand residue left over from the casting as well as to deburr the steel.  This provides a sound base for any paint finishes required by a customer. Following this the product can be painted using an airless spray system, to ensure a consistent paint finish.
