NDT: non-destructive testing

In sectors like construction and engineering, only high quality steel fabrications will do. So how can fabrication companies ensure that their steelwork meets the demanding criteria that these industries require?

For a start, companies that provide steelwork to the construction industry in the UK and the rest of Europe are required to hold CE marking accreditation for any product they manufacture for use in the industry, such as structural supports, beams, bolts etc. This ensures that the steelwork complies with the safety performance requirements of the Construction Products Directive.

Where does non-destructive testing fit in?

NDT, or non-destructive testing, is a vital part of the steel fabrication process. It ensures that fabricated products and components are safe and reliable. NDT testing is, as its name suggests, carried out in such a way that it does not affect the product.

During the fabrication process, qualified NDT technicians carry out a number of tests for wear, fatigue, corrosion and stress, ensuring that it is fit for purpose, safe, robust and reliable. They will also ensure that the company’s strict quality control processes are followed, as well as meeting the customers’ specifications.

What qualifications are required?

NDT technicians will hold PCN (Personnel Certification in Non-Destructive Testing) qualifications, which is based on BS EN ISO 9712 and covers proficiency in one or more of the following testing methods:

• Technicians holding CSWIP (Certification Scheme for Welding Inspection Personnel) qualifications will carry out stringent tests during the welding procedures such as phase pre-heat, weld size, material integrity etc., to ensure that welding is carried out to a very high standard.

• Lycett Fabrication’s NDT technicians are qualified to PCN Level 2 for magnetic particle inspection and dye penetration testing, and CSWIP Levels 1 and 2.
